The Right to Roam in Norway

🌿 The Right to Roam in Norway: What You Need to Know

One of the most beautiful parts of experiencing nature in Norway is something called "allemannsretten" – the right to roam. It’s not just a law; it’s a deeply rooted part of Norwegian culture and values.

If you’re joining us for Movement Made Festival 2026 at Nøsen, nestled high in the Valdres mountains, allemannsretten is the reason you can explore so freely — from forest paths and open meadows to hidden lakes and stunning mountain views.

Here’s what it means, and how to enjoy it with care and respect:

    🏕 What Is Allemannsretten?

Allemannsretten is a traditional right that gives everyone access to uncultivated land in nature — no matter who owns it. It’s enshrined in Norwegian law, and it means that you’re free to walk, rest, camp, swim, and explore in most natural landscapes across the country.

It’s an open invitation from nature itself — but it comes with a responsibility: leave no trace, and treat the land with respect.

🌲 What You’re Allowed to Do

During the festival (and before or after if you're exploring Valdres on your own), this is what allemannsretten allows you to enjoy:

    • Hiking & walking anywhere on uncultivated land

    • Foraging for wild berries, mushrooms, and flowers (yum!)

    • Camping in a tent, for up to 2 nights in one spot (as long as you’re at least 150 meters from a house or cabin)

    • Swimming in lakes and rivers

    • Sitting, meditating, handstanding or training outdoors wherever it feels right

    🙏 The Golden Rule: Respect

With freedom comes care. Here’s how to honour the land, the people, and the wildlife around you:

    • Leave no trace – take all your waste with you

    • Stick to marked trails where possible (especially in sensitive mountain areas)

    • Don’t disturb animals or pick endangered plants

    • Be mindful of private cabins – even if no one’s home, treat them as private spaces

    • Don’t light open fires in dry periods (April 15 - September 15)

    • Keep your distance from grazing animals – they’re part of local farming culture

    🌄 Allemannsretten at Nøsen

At Nøsen Yoga & Mountain Retreat, we’re surrounded by open land, mountain trails, and endless skies. Allemannsretten is part of why this place feels so free — and why we can host this festival surrounded by raw nature.

So when you’re stretching at sunrise, jumping in the lake, or trail running barefoot through moss and stone — know that you’re part of something ancient and shared.

Nature is for everyone here. And as long as we protect it, it always will be.

    💚 A Final Word

We invite you to experience allemannsretten not just as a “right,” but as a relationship. With the land, with the people who live here, and with each other.

Welcome to Norway. Welcome to the Movement Made Festival. And welcome home — out in the open.
